Gutters & Downspouts: Their Purpose and Maintaining Them

Introduction to the first HB Blog is an exciting thought as home maintenance has been something I've stressed for years that we don't know enough about.  Many times, our homes are our #1 investments, yet we know so little about how to take care of them.  Maintenance is necessary to keep our investment alive and growing!

Our lives have become busy or, for many, worlds have split. What used to be considered a "Man's Duty" or a "Woman's Job" is now being taken care of by one person in so many households. Whether your home is a Dual Duty Home or the Other, our goal is to help you with being your single source of maintenance needs and why. We will also prove our intensions as your Custom Remodeling Design Contractor.

Ok, it's time to start sharing our knowledge:

GUTTERS:  With all of the rain, check your gutters.

Make sure they are clear of debris (no little trees or even just leaves) in the gutter itself. Clean them out if there is anything in them.  This is necessary to do so for the longevity of many parts of your home. It protects your roof, as well as your foundation - who knew?!? With debris in the gutters, water can back up under your shingles. This can cause your roof deck (wood) to rot. Doesn't sound good? It's not!! Your foundation doesn't like debris in gutters either. Debris (or even leaking gutters) can cause water to spill over (or pour out of) the gutters onto the ground next to your foundation. The ground becomes extra saturated at the leak. The saturated ground looks for and/or caused weak spots in your foundation. Your foundation says "I GIVE" and you then have basement issues.

DOWNSPOUT EXTENSIONS:  We can't talk about Gutters without including Downspout Extensions.

Downspout Extensions are a part of the Gutter System. This System keeps water the required distance from your foundation when discharged down the spout from your ENTIRE ROOF. Keep your downspouts connected! A minimum of 36" in length is recommended in our Northern climates.

NOTE: If you don't have a good exterior, you won't have a good interior.
